Karla Washington earned her PhD degree in 2009. Karla is an assistant professor at the University of Louisville.
Q. What made you decide to pursue a career as a professional social worker?
A. My own family's experiences led to my appreciation of the power of social work in health care settings and prompted my initial investigation into social work as a career. Upon learning more about social work and its core values, I knew it was the right choice.
Q. What advice would you give someone who was considering a career in social work?
A. I would advise students considering a career in social work to reflect on their own abilities, values, and interests before choosing a career path. Social work is a challenging profession that requires significant knowledge, energy, and skills. It is often rewarding work, but it is rarely easy work.
Q. How did you decide upon the MU School of Social Work?
A. The MU School of Social Work is large enough to provide world-class opportunities, yet small enough to deliver an educational experience that can be tailored to meet each student's needs.
Q. What aspect of your educational experience at the MU School of Social Work has been the most valuable in your current job?
The MU School of Social Work faculty provided a supportive environment in which I was able to develop skills in research and teaching. The faculty's mentorship significantly enhanced my educational experience.
