Shannon Swanson is a BSW student at the School of Social Work.
Q. How did you first learn about the profession of social work?
A. I came to visit Mizzou in the spring of my junior year of high school and was looking around the college fair held in Memorial Union. Tammy Freelin, who is now my advisor and pretty much my surrogate mother, began talking to me about social work. From that day I knew that it wasn't psychology I needed to study to do what I wanted - it was social work. I've never looked back.
Q. What have been the most valuable aspects of your educational experiences so far
at the MU School of Social Work?
A. I love how caring everyone in the school is. We all have the same goal - to help others in whatever way we can and that includes helping each other. I have found such a wonderful support system and truly a family in Mizzou social work.
Q. What do you hope to do after you graduate?
A. I hope to continue with my education and earn my MSW either from Mizzou or possibly overseas. I have also entertained the idea of joining the Peace Corps before finding a permanent job working as a victim's advocate in the court system.
Thanks for taking the time to talk about your experiences with us, Shannon.
