Jordan Petrek is a BSW student at the School of Social Work. She will complete her field
placement at the Juvenile Justice Center in the fall of 2009.
Q. How did you first learn about the profession of social work?
A. In high school I decided I wanted to work with drug and alcohol addicts. When I told my counselor about it he suggested social work and I have been hooked ever since.
Q. What have been the most valuable aspects of your educational experiences so far
at the MU School of Social Work?
A. The various styles of teaching and first hand experience have been the highlight for me within the School of Social Work. I found it very beneficial being able to volunteer at a pregnancy clinic, a house for abused and neglected children, attend a domestic violence court, visit a domestic violence shelter, as well as interact with a panel of individuals from Fulton State Mental Hospital. Although reading and lectures are necessary, such experiences are invaluable.
Q. What do you hope to do after you graduate?
A. When I graduate, I want to work within the corrections system, either in a juvenile detention center or a jail. I have not decided exactly what I want to do when I get there, but trying to help people find jobs once they are released from the facility is a possibility.
