Spotlight on Alumni - Amber Moodie-Dyer

Amber Moodie-Dyer earned her PhD in 2011. Amber is an assistant professor at Ohio State University.
Q. What made you decide to pursue a career as a professional social worker?
A. My parents instilled in me from a very young age the importance of understanding where others come from and contributing to my community and fellow human beings. In my opinion, there is no other profession that does this better than social work.
Q. How did you decide upon the MU School of Social Work?
A. I am from Missouri and believe strongly in public institutions and the work they do in the community. The research conducted, not only in the School of Social Work but throughout the University of Missouri system, is very community based and driven by the needs of local communities and the state. I also appreciated the fact that the MU School of Social Work provided the kind of flexibility I wanted to design my own research project.
Q. What advice would you give someone who was considering a career in social work?
A. Explore every aspect of the field of social work. You may think you want to do clinical work with children and families (as I did when I started my MSW) and end up finding that your real passion is community organizing or macro practice. Keep all options open and find your passion!
Q. What aspects of your educational experience at the MU School of Social Work has been the most valuable in your current job?
A. The school taught me to be a self-starter and to work independently, this is critical in an academic position in which you often have only yourself to be accountable to in the short run.
