Dana Carter is a shelter director at Rainbow House in Columbia, MO. She received an AA from Moberly Junior College in 1981, a BSW from the University of Missouri in 1996 and a MSW from the University of Missouri in 1998. Dana also obtained her LCSW in 2002.
Q. Can you describe your work history?
A. I started employment at Rainbow House in December 2007 as a shelter clinical coordinator. I was promoted to shelter director in February 2009. I still provide clinical services to the children in our shelter and also supervise the volunteer coordinator in seeking out appropriate volunteers.
Q. What are the typical opportunities you provide to student interns?
A. The students are provided a vast array of experiences at Rainbow House. They conduct developmental and psychosocial assessments, sit in on forensic interviews, assist with parenting and family groups and group and individual therapy, provide office support, participate in community outreach and grant writing initiatives, and attend community networking events, etc.
Q. What has been the most rewarding aspects of your field instructor/volunteer work so far with MU School of Social Work?
A. Supervising interns is a very rewarding experience. The students are eager to learn, ask questions, problem solve and serve as part of the Rainbow House team. I enjoy working with students. It's exciting to see the growth, not only in knowledge, but also in character and passion. The students share their dreams and future goals after graduation. We have an opportunity to bond and develop friendships, since they will be our colleagues in the future!
