Off-Campus MSW Program

The Master of Social Work Off-Campus Program (MSW) prepares graduates for leadership in professional social work practice within the area of Clinical Practice. The graduate curriculum provides an educational experience that is rigorous, comprehensive and progressive, preparing graduates for a range of advanced career opportunities.

Developed in response to the needs of rural communities for advanced social work education opportunities, the Off-Campus Program provides a CSWE-accredited MSW program to various locations throughout the state. Currently, programs in southeast, northwest, and northcentral Missouri are available. They utilize on-site instruction and instructional technology such as on-line courses and an ITV system (interactive television). Each program is conducted on a part-time basis over a period of three to four years so students can continue working while obtaining the MSW degree.

The School offers its southeast Missouri MSW program in collaboration with Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and University of Missouri Extension Telecommunication Centers sites at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Mineral Area Community College in Park Hills, and the MO Delta Center in Portageville.

The northwest Missouri MSW program is offered in collaboration with Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville and North Central Community College in Trenton.

The north central Missouri MSW program is offered in collaboration with Truman State University in Kirksville and University of Missouri Extension Telecommunication Centers in Kirksville & Palmyra, the Brookfield Area Career Center in Macon and the Moberly Area Community College.

Typically, two courses are offered each semester. One meets in person at a local site or online; the other is taught from the MU campus via a variety of instructional technologies. Instructors include faculty from the Columbia campus and local faculty members. Local program coordinators are on-site during ITV broadcasts to facilitate to answer questions, provide support and address program issues before and/or after class. Facilities for classrooms, library research, and computer resources are provided by the local institutions. Students must have access to independent computer resources in order to complete a significant amount of required online coursework.

All of our off campus programs use a cohort model of education. Students take most of the coursework together. Regular standing MSW students begin in Spring Semester (January). Advanced Standing students join the Regular standing students in Spring Semester of the following year (January).

We are now accepting applications for Regular Standing students to begin study in January 2009. Click here for application information, including deadlines for submission. The next cohort of Advanced Standing students for off campus programs is expected to begin coursework in 2010.
