The Pruitt-Igoe Myth: Documentary Film and Continuing Education Event on Ethics
Posted: June 6, 2011
The School of Social Work will host a continuing education event, including a documentary film, Q&A with the film director and ethics workshop, on Friday, September 16, 2011 in Memorial Union. The film, entitled The Pruitt-Igoe Myth: An Urban History, explores the short life of the Pruitt-Igoe housing development, which was opened in 1954 to meet the public housing needs of an overcrowded city. Two decades later, with its highly-publicized demolition, Pruitt-Igoe became a potent international symbol of failure, a failure that has been used to critique Modernist architecture, attack public assistance programs and stigmatize public housing residents. The film attempts to reassess the complex history of Pruitt-Igoe within the larger post-War context of segregation, poverty and urban population decline.
If you are interested in learning more about The Pruitt-Igoe Myth, please visit the website and view the trailer at www.pruitt-igoe.com, or you can find more information on Facebook.

Distinguished Lecture Series in Psychology
Posted: Aug. 31, 2011
Nancy Eisenberg, Regents Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University, will be the first speaker in the 2011-12 Distinguished Lecture Series in Psychology on Thursday, September 8 in Jesse Wrench Auditorium (S107 Memorial Union) from 3:30 to 5pm. The title of Dr. Eisenberg's talk is "Emotion-related self-regulation: Conceptualization and relations with adjustment."
A reception at Sycamore on Broadway will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 that evening. Please RSVP no later than Monday, Sept. 5th to Kelly Davis if you plan to attend the reception (daviskel@missouri.edu). Your response is very much appreciated as we use these responses to estimate the amount of food to order.
A brief abstract and bio for Dr. Eisenberg's talk can be found below:
Emotion-related self-regulation: Conceptualization and relations with adjustment. A variety of constructs have historically been considered when discussing emotion regulation. Eisenberg will discuss different conceptualizations of emotion-related regulation and differentiate between effortful control and aspects of control that are less voluntary (reactive control). After briefly discussing how these constructs are typically measured, she will discuss the possible relationship between self-regulation and reactive control, and how it relates to adjustment and maladjustment. Finally, she will briefly present findings indicating that individual differences in children’s self-regulation appear to mediate between positive (or negative) parenting practices and children’s maladjustment.
Dr. Nancy Eisenberg, Regents Professor of Psychology, Arizona State University, has published numerous books, chapters, and papers on socioemotional and moral development. She is editor of the /Handbook of Child Psychology, Vol. 3/, and she is the founding editor of the new Society for Research in Child Development journal, /Child Development Perspectives/, and past editor of /Psychological Bulletin/. She is the 2007 recipient of the Ernest R. Hilgard Award for a Career Contribution to General Psychology (APA); the 2008 recipient of the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award; the 2009 recipient of the G. Stanley Hall Award Recipient Award for Distinguished Contribution to Developmental Psychology (APA); and the 2011 William James Fellow Career Contribution Award (APS).

Posted: Dec. 9, 2009
Kim M. Anderson, PhD, is an associate professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Missouri where she teaches clinical practice and evaluation courses at the graduate level. Dr. Anderson's scholarship bridges gaps between theory and practice by offering conceptual frameworks that captures the interplay of trauma and resilience for survivors of family violence and mental health practitioners. "Enhancing Resilience in Survivors of Family Violence" demonstrates the extent to which individuals with histories of family violence can have "self-correcting" tendencies that promote their positive adaptation in overcoming trauma. These strengths, which often go unrecognized or underappreciated, can be used for healing. This book assists mental health practitioners in identifying, supporting, and validating the resilient capacities of their clients.
