student retention rate high.

The School of Social Work attracts students who
seek professional careers that are dynamic, challenging and deeply
satisfying. The school provides students with the knowledge, skills
and experience they need to assist individuals, groups and society.
Students learn how to address complex challenges relating to physical,
emotional, psychological, economic and social well-being.
In hospitals, prisons, schools, mental health
agencies, government and numerous other settings, social work graduates
use their skills and knowledge to challenge social inequities in
order to establish just and caring communities. They help empower
clients to maximize their strengths and opportunities for change,
which enhances the well-being of individuals and society.
Since the financial rewards of the social work
profession can be modest, student debt is particularly burdensome
for new graduates. We must do all we can to make social work a viable
career option by providing scholarship support to a greater number
of qualified students.
We also must increase the amount of endowed
scholarship funds for recruiting and retaining high-quality, geographically
diverse and ethnically diverse master’s and doctoral students.
This would help the school attract a student body that is representative
of people in our state and nation, as well as meet the needs of
diverse populations.
