Instill Inspiration and
Integrity
Faculty research runs the gamut,
examining topics such as death and dying,
mental health and domestic violence.
|

Our outstanding faculty make substantive contributions
to expand knowledge in many vital areas, including gerontology,
mental health, public health, community development, children and
family services, international social development and other topics.
The school’s external funds continue to
exceed general operating dollars, evidence of our faculty’s
ability to compete for major research projects and use resources
efficiently. These grants help provide assistantships to students,
who work alongside faculty in major research.
Students learn from a global perspective, too,
as faculty members share knowledge from their endeavors in Africa,
Europe and North America. Faculty members share expertise with state
government and other entities through program evaluation and membership
on various boards and committees. Their experiences expose students
to real-world applications of social work theory and practice.
A recent study in the Journal of Social Service
Research placed our school among the top 15 percent of 151 graduate
social work programs in number of peer-reviewed publications produced
by faculty.
This achievement is even more impressive because
the school has only 14 tenure-track faculty members, about half
the average number at peer institutions. Of the 14, seven are new
to our school, and all of our faculty members have earned doctorates
at research universities. The school’s ability to attract
these high-quality new faculty members reflects well on our reputation,
especially considering the national shortage of doctoral graduates
in social work.
Competition is intense for social work
faculty, particularly for those who earned doctorates at research
universities. Yet the school’s continued growth is limited
without the necessary funds to support additional faculty positions.
In addition, to maintain and enhance our ability to attract and
retain top talent, we must provide research funds, distinguished
lectureships and professional development opportunities that stimulate
scholarship.
